2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range First Drive: Bring the Family

2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range First Drive By Kim Reynolds, Renz Dimaandal – Photos – MotorTrend

Meet Jim and Dorothy Average. They’re the Average household. He’s 5-foot-9. She’s 5-foot-4. They have 1.9 kids (daughter Emma is of the opinion that younger brother, Liam, is the 0.9), and they live in Lebanon, Kansas, the geographic center of the country. They spent the national average of $38,000 for a nicely featured version of their mainstream compact SUV.

Although there might be shares of Tesla stock in their 401(k), they themselves have never seriously considered one of their fancy, big electric SUVs—especially one that starts at $86,000can hit 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, or has rising, electrically powered double-hinge doors. Nor have they shopped a smaller electric sedan with a relatively tight back seat and something called Track mode that is really neat while driving on a figure-eight course. These cars might be the toasts of the coasts and terrors of the test tracks, but you won’t find them in the Average driveway.

Move Over M4, BMW i4 To Become The Most Powerful 4 Series

By: Adrian PadeanuMotor1

The fully electric four-door 4 Series could be joined by a conventionally powered M4 Gran Coupe.

When BMW laid out the plans for the next-generation 7 Series earlier this year, it promised to offer its flagship model with gasoline and diesel engines, topped by a fully electric variant. It would seem it’ll be the same story with the 4 Series as the M4 / M4 Competition will be dethroned by the i4 in terms of output. That’s the story we’re hearing from Autocar, which claims the road-going i4 will have a dual-motor setup with 523 hp and approximately 600 pound-feet (813 Newton-meters).

How do these numbers stack up against the M4? Well, BMW hasn’t revealed the car yet, but the inline-six should deliver somewhere in the region of 503 hp. That would represent only 20 hp less than the i4, but the far more significant difference will be the torque. While the i4 is claimed to have roughly 600 pound-feet (813 Newton-meters), the M4 in Competition spec will have to make do with “only” 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) provided that number will be carried over from the X4 M Competition.

Tesla Model 3 Is Britain’s Best-Selling Car, a First for an EV

By Angus MacKenzieMotorTrend

Tesla’s Model 3 was the best-selling car in Britain last month, the first time in history an electric vehicle has ever topped the country’s new car sales chart. The second best-seller for the month was another EV, Jaguar’s I-Pace—and Nissan’s Leaf also earned a place in the top 10. In total, electric vehicles comprised almost one-third of total new car sales in Britain in April 2020. And yet, the unprecedented increase in electric vehicle market share is not quite as game-changing as it seems.

Tesla‘s success has come in a month when overall new vehicle sales in Britain crashed a staggering 97 percent as the country went into Covid-19 lockdown. Tesla sold 658 Model 3s, Jaguar 367 I-Paces, and Nissan just 72 Leafs to earn their places among the country’s top 10 sellers. Elsewhere, Tesla is still delivering cars throughout the health crisis, albeit with modified delivery methods.

The Top Gear car review: Volkswagen e-Up

The all-electric version of the Volkswagen Up, which is the best city car you can buy. The e-Up is also one of the three VW Group city car clones – you can buy an electric Skoda called the Citigo i-EV, or a Seat Mii Electric, sharing exactly the same powertrain.

Said powertrain is much improved since we first copped the e-Up way back in 2013. Then, it made do with an 18.8kWh battery, and a best-case scenario range of 118 miles – on the old NEDC test. Best of luck with that.

Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport Get Three-Cylinder PHEV Versions

By: Angel SergeevMotor1

Both have more than 300 horsepower.

The rumors were true – the Range Rover Evoque gets a new three-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. We spotted a test prototype of that vehicle back in January and it turns out the chic crossover won’t be the only model in the brand’s range to receive the new eco-friendly system. The Discovery Sport also benefits from the P300e-branded hybrid engine.

The core of the system is a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged unit, good for 197 horsepower (147 kilowatts), supported by a 107-hp (80-kW) electric motor mounted on the rear axle and a 15kWh lithium-ion battery. The combined output is rated at 304 hp (227 kW) and 398 pound-feet (540 Newton-meters) of torque for both the Evoque and Disco Sport.

Tesla’s Next Autopilot Feature? Traffic Light Recognition and Response (Sort Of)

By Alan Lau – MotorTrend

If you go to Tesla’s website to order a car today, you’ll find that a new upcoming feature for the brand’s Full Self-Driving Capability (a $7000 add-on promising autonomous capability in the future, but not now). Is it full self-driving? No. But the new addition, dubbed “Recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs” is a step toward FSD’s promised autonomous capabilities, even if it’s not yet been officially rolled out.

What does the still-beta-phase feature do? Just what you’d expect, given its name: It allows Teslas to “see” traffic signals and and stop signs—essentially, detect intersections—and respond accordingly. This was put on display on Out of Spec Motoring’s YouTube channel, which shared a video of a Tesla Model 3 automatically stopping for a red light with Autopilot engaged and also claiming it halted at stop sign. Arresting, for sure, but Tesla hadn’t—and still hasn’t—announced anything about this new FSD component rolling out to the fleet, which indicates it must only be available to a small group of Tesla users under a pilot program.

Best Luxury SUVs and Genesis Lineup

Welcome to Fabulous Auto Club, and here we have a Special Edition article which includes the Best Luxury SUVs List. We sort them into electric, compact, midsize, and full-size. Congratulations to all the automakers who made it onto the list!

Electric

1. Tesla Model X

2. Audi e-tron

3. Jaguar I-Pace

Compact

1. Volvo XC40

2. BMW X1

3. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Midsize

1. Mercedes GLC300 Coupe

2. Porsche Cayenne

3. Audi Q8

Full-Size

1. BMW X7

2. Land Rover Range Rover

3. Infiniti QX80

Genesis Lineup

Genesis is probably the newest popular automaker. A lot of people might not believe that it’s as good as Mercedes, BMW, or Audi. However, this is a good time to buy a Genesis (which is actually better than its rivals).

G70

The G70 (blue, middle) is a midsize luxury sedan starting at $42000 CAD ($31790 USD) set to compete with the C-Class, 3 Series, and A4. The exterior looks very sporty with an aggressive grill and side vents. And the interior is extremely luxurious and high-quality coming from a new automaker.

G80

The Genesis G80 (black, right) is also a midsize sedan which is $58120 CAD ($43997 USD) which is for buyers looking for an E-Class, 5 Series, or A6. I think that the exterior is a bit too normal. It actually looks a bit like the Ford Fusion, which is not a compliment. The interior is just okay, but not as good as its rivals. The infotainment is not as good as the G70’s or G90’s. This is not a recommended car to buy.

G90

The G90 (grey, left) is a full-size luxury sedan, a successor of the Hyundai Equus (which is a very good deal for a used car), and it costs around $86750 CAD ($65664 USD). It’s much better than the G80, and even better than an S-Class or A8. The G90 looks very unique outside, and has very many features for the passengers inside.

Tesla Model S vs. Audi e-tron GT

From Automoblog

The Tesla Model S has the looks of a luxury car, the stance of a sports sedan, and the performance of a supercar. However, if you think the Audi e-tron GT is merely a concept car, think again. Audi says it’s 99 percent ready for production and will be available later this year. As the name suggests, the e-tron GT is a gran turismo of the highest order. But which one would you choose? Here is our virtual showdown of Tesla Model S vs. Audi e-tron GT …

Porsche Taycan vs Tesla Model S

Almost everyone knows the Tesla Model S. It’s their oldest vehicle, and despite being made in 2012, it’s filled with technology. Why, you might ask, are we comparing this to a Porsche?

Porsche has just launched their fully electric executive sedan, the Porsche Taycan. They could have just made an electric Panamera, but you get this instead. Its perfect rival (since not many automakers have entered this segment) is the Model S.

Price

  • Model S – $107700 CAD ($82462 USD)
  • Taycan – $119000 CAD (91110 USD)

Performance

Comparing the Model S P100D and the Taycan Turbo S: The Tesla battery is 100 kWh and the Taycan’s is 93.4 kWh. Apparently, the Porsche has 163 more horsepower than the Model S (751>588). The Model S does 0-60 in 2.87 seconds, while the Taycan’s acceleration time is 2.66 seconds. Charging ranges are roughly 600km for a Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan can go to 450km on a single charge.

Styling

The Model S looks very different from other cars, yet very sleek. The verdict for styling is definitely the Porsche Taycan, due to the fact that it looks somewhat like a 911. The rear is actually one of the best designs in the car industry. However, the door handles are not flush and tucked in like the Tesla.

Interior

Both are standard with a fixed panoramic roof. I think that the Porsche’s interior is more luxurious and practical. There’s not much to say about the interiors, so I think that luxury automakers like Mercedes and BMW should go into this segment to make more competition.

Verdict

The Porsche Taycan wins this comparison, although Tesla is a perfect market disruptor which makes very technologically advanced cars. If you’re looking for something more luxurious and practical, choose the Taycan for only $10K more. It’s also more powerful and faster.
