2020 Porsche Taycan Interior Review

By Scott Evans Words; William Walker Photos

The 2020 Porsche Taycan is quick—and fast. It beat even the mighty Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous in the quarter-mile after closing a tenth of a second gap at 60 mph and never looking back.  That’s great for bragging rights, but all that accelerative force doesn’t mean squat when you’re sitting in traffic. That’s when one’s thoughts turn inward.

Short question long, what’s the interior of the Taycan, the place where you’ll spend all your time, like to live in?

With a current starting price of $114,340, the Taycan needs to deliver on comfort and technology to fully justify its price tag. (Technically, the tag is $105,150, but until June 2020 you can’t order the car without $9,190 of options in the form of a panoramic glass roof, larger battery, and advanced portable charger.)

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 First Drive: Antisocial and Proud

By Jonny Lieberman Words; ManufacturerPhotos

It’s lonely at the top of the huge-horsepower food chain. Think about the segment the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 competes in: over 600 horsepower, top-shelf, 3-row SUVs: There’s no other vehicle in it. BMW does not make an X7M, Audi does not build an RS Q7. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo has but two rows. Cullinan? Bentayga? Urus? 2-row, 2-row, only 2 rows. Cadillac doesn’t make an Escalade-V, nor does Lincoln sell a Navigator with over 600 horsepower, though Hennessey makes and sells the 600-hp Navigator HPE600. The Tesla Model X P100D is the closest competitor both in terms of power and price, but I’ve driven both SUVs and philosophically they are worlds apart. The GLS 63 stands apart from this crowd.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S vs. BMW X5 M Competition Comparison

Old rivals square off again.

By: Brandon Turkus

Once upon a time, BMW M and Mercedes-AMG fought their biggest battles with sedans and coupes. But as with any war, new theaters open, and today’s fight is in the crossover space, with M and AMG fielding high-performance versions of nearly every CUV in their respective parent company’s stable.

But while the theater has changed, war… war never changes. The E63 and M5 sedans continue to battle for supremacy as their crossover counterparts, the redesigned Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and BMW X5 M, prepare to enter the fray. Each of these crossovers pack twin-turbocharged, 600-plus-horsepower V8 engines, advanced suspension technologies, and enough tech to keep a fighter jet in the air. Like we said, war never changes.

Quick Ways to Save on Your Car Insurance

Consider The Car That You Drive

Educating yourself about the car’s expenses including insurance at the very beginning of the car-purchasing decision is very important. Ask around for the insurance costs of the car you wish to purchase and consider your budget. A luxury or sporty car can be several times more expensive than a regular car. Also if the car model is in demand by car thieves or has been involved in more accidents statistically, expect to pay more. Comes down to buying the car that makes sense for your wallet.

Get Multiple Quotes

When looking for car insurance for your car, you have to shop around. Contact several insurance providers and do some kind of comparison study before committing. There are also lots of insurance brokers online who can actually do this you. Not doing this is probably the biggest mistake car owners make. You can be very surprised at the differences in the car insurance market. A lot of folks are just too lazy to do the research.

Maximize Your Deductible

The insurance deductible what you will pay in an insurance claim before the insurance coverage kicks in. When you have a deductible, you have to come up with that amount before a claim gets paid by the company. The higher the deductible, the less insurance you have to pay

Consider the age of your car and decide on what sort of repairs you will be willing to cover yourself before filing a claim. Studies have shown that you save around 8% by raising your deductible from $500 to $1000. Play around with the insurance calculators to see how it will affect the bottom line.

Consider Combining policies

Most insurance companies noways offer insurance covers for different categories. If you have or normally get home insurance, health/travel insurance, or even life insurance, check if bundling the policies will get you a discount.

Dealing with a single insurance company for all your insurance needs may also simplify your finances. Make sure it makes sense though as some insurance covers are for multiple years and you may not want to be tied down to the same car insurance company until your other insurance cover expires or is due for renewal.

Get All The Discounts You Can

There are many discounts offered by insurance companies for things such as having a long safe driving record, having proper security and safety devices in your vehicle, and even belonging to a certain group/affiliation. Make sure you take advantage of all the ones available. See which ones are offered by the insurance company you are considering. These may include:

  • Being accident free
  • Security devices such as alarms, immobilization devices
  • Where you park
  • Safety devices such as winter tires during the winter months
  • Being a senior
  • Being a member of a certain organization/club/university alumni etc

Pay by Distance Travelled

Some insurance companies may allow you to pay insurance by the distance you drive. This could be very beneficial if you do not drive long distances to work, school or other place that you need to get to. You should inquire with the car insurance company to see this can work for you.

Reduce Your Coverage

In the case of regular/standard vehicles (not luxury/rare/exotic cars), as your car ages, the need to insure against damage to the car reduces. Just like raising your deductibles, you may consider reducing the coverage. In some cases, especially if the car is quite old, the payments of the premiums and deductibles may be much higher than the value of the car. Re-evaluate your insurance needs every year to ensure that you get the best deal for your premiums.

Drive Safely

This is a fairly obvious but an understated fact. The safer you drive, the lesser the chances of something happening to you and your car on the road. The longer you maintain this record, the lower your premiums will get with the coming years.

Many insurance companies nowadays have progressive insurance offers where you plug a device into your car or install an app into your phone. The device/app monitors certain driving habits such as duration, hard stops, daytime vs nighttime driving etc.

Consider opting into such a program and you may see a significant decrease in the cost in your car insurance.

Watch Your Credit

Some insurance companies can factor in your credit history while calculating your premiums. While credit history does not have much to do with driving, correlations can be drawn by how you handle your finances. Someone with a higher credit history is more likely to ensure that all their insurance needs are covered and is more careful when dealing with claims.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs BMW 3 Series vs Audi A4 vs Genesis G70 vs Infiniti Q50 vs Jaguar XE vs Volvo S60 vs Lexus ES vs Acura TLX vs Alfa Romeo Giulia

Welcome back to Fabulous Auto Club, and this post is the largest comparison (and also longest title) in our blog to date! We’re comparing ten different compact luxury sedans which are for family comfort with prices ranging from $35000 to $50000 CAD.

Pricing

  • Mercedes C-Class – $46100
  • BMW 3 Series – $49000
  • Audi A4 – $39800
  • Genesis G70 – $42000
  • Infiniti Q50 – $43995
  • Jaguar XE – $49900
  • Volvo S60 – $42400
  • Lexus ES – $45000
  • Acura TLX – $37490
  • Alfa Romeo Giulia – $49345

Prices are subject to change.

Styling

The C-Class, 3 Series, TLX, XE, and A4 all look somewhat boring, but a new 3 Series is coming for the 2020 model year. The sportiest is the Genesis G70 because of its position and the side vent that makes it feel like a racing car. The Giulia is very similar, just like what you would expect from an Alfa Romeo. The Q50 looks like a baby Q70 and can appear outdated. The best looking car by far here is the Volvo S60 for only $42400! The Lexus ES literally looks sharp because of its edges, not to mention the oversized grill.

Performance

The performance of compact/midsize sedans range from 240 to 500 horsepower, which is a big range due to the fact that you can upgrade to AMG, Quadrifoglio, F Sport, Polestar and many others. I have to note that the A4 only has 188 horsepower, and that’s just another example of an under-powered Audi. Most of them are powered by an inline-4 with the optional V6.

Interior Comfort

To make sure everyone in your family/group of friends has comfort, luxury sedans are equipped with leather seats (heated and cooled), wood trims, and advanced climate control. The C-Class and G70 specifically stand out by looking in the interior. The Jaguar XE has failed to provide optimal interior quality unlike other rivals in this segment.

Verdict

  1. Genesis G70, 87.5%
  2. Volvo S60, 85%
  3. Alfa Romeo Giulia, 80%
  4. BMW 3 Series, 72.5%
  5. Lexus ES, 60%
  6. Infiniti Q50, 55%
  7. Audi A4, 45%
  8. Mercedes C-Class, 37.5%
  9. Acura TLX, 35%
  10. Jaguar XE, 20%

Porsche Taycan vs Tesla Model S

Almost everyone knows the Tesla Model S. It’s their oldest vehicle, and despite being made in 2012, it’s filled with technology. Why, you might ask, are we comparing this to a Porsche?

Porsche has just launched their fully electric executive sedan, the Porsche Taycan. They could have just made an electric Panamera, but you get this instead. Its perfect rival (since not many automakers have entered this segment) is the Model S.

Price

  • Model S – $107700 CAD ($82462 USD)
  • Taycan – $119000 CAD (91110 USD)

Performance

Comparing the Model S P100D and the Taycan Turbo S: The Tesla battery is 100 kWh and the Taycan’s is 93.4 kWh. Apparently, the Porsche has 163 more horsepower than the Model S (751>588). The Model S does 0-60 in 2.87 seconds, while the Taycan’s acceleration time is 2.66 seconds. Charging ranges are roughly 600km for a Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan can go to 450km on a single charge.

Styling

The Model S looks very different from other cars, yet very sleek. The verdict for styling is definitely the Porsche Taycan, due to the fact that it looks somewhat like a 911. The rear is actually one of the best designs in the car industry. However, the door handles are not flush and tucked in like the Tesla.

Interior

Both are standard with a fixed panoramic roof. I think that the Porsche’s interior is more luxurious and practical. There’s not much to say about the interiors, so I think that luxury automakers like Mercedes and BMW should go into this segment to make more competition.

Verdict

The Porsche Taycan wins this comparison, although Tesla is a perfect market disruptor which makes very technologically advanced cars. If you’re looking for something more luxurious and practical, choose the Taycan for only $10K more. It’s also more powerful and faster.

BMW 7 Series

Pricing and Engines

The BMW 7 Series is BMW’s full-size luxury sedan starting at $120 300 to $173 600 in Canada, and $96 950 to $141 700 in the USA. It’s actually based on the Rolls-Royce Ghost and comes with an extremely wide range of engines starting from a 2.0L Turbo I-4 to a 6.6L Twin-Turbocharged N74 V12, and even a plug-in hybrid. Fabulous Score: 75%

Configurations

The different versions (in order of price) are 750i xDrive, 745Le Hybrid, 750Li xDrive, M760Li xDrive, and the high-performance Alpina B7 Long Wheelbase, with up to 600 horsepower and 590 lb/ft of torque. Each configuration may not upgrade certain interior features, but horsepower and technology (like in the infotainment screens) are certainly improved in the 750Li, which is the long wheelbase model. Fabulous Score: 65%

Interior

The interior of the 7 Series is aesthetically pleasing and luxurious in all models, and is a direct rival to the Mercedes S-Class. Of course, there are large amounts of amenities in the rear seats, including heated, cooled, and massaging seats, fragrances, and entertainment screens for rear passengers. A feature that really sets the interior apart from most other luxury sedans is the Experience Mode, which basically allows the passengers to choose a ‘mood’ in the car that activates many other features such as the climate control and ambient lighting. Fabulous Score: 97%

Exterior Styling

When you think of exterior styling of any BMW, the first thing that comes to mind is the signature kidney grille. It’s probably the most controversial exterior styling feature in the car industry. My opinion is that it looks ugly on the 7 Series, but suits large SUVs like the X5 and X7. Otherwise, the styling is very modern, with sleek and dramatic lines on the sides. Fabulous Score: 80%

Verdict

The average Fabulous Score is 79.25%, which cannot be compared to other cars in the segment yet due to amount of posts. See a video from Doug DeMuro for more information.

Volvo XC90 vs Mercedes GLE

Welcome back to Fabulous Auto Club, and today we’re comparing the Volvo XC90 and Mercedes GLE. They are premium 7-seat SUVs to carry everyone in your family while arriving to a place in style.

Price

The XC90 starts at $59750 CAD ($45058 USD) while the GLE starts at $64000 CAD ($48263 USD). That may not seem like a lot, but once you equip them with all the options, they can go to $80000!

Engines

Both come with a 2.0L inline-4 (a bit under-powered in my opinion). However, you can upgrade to an inline-6 or a V6, depending on which model you get. The GLE is turbocharged with 255 horsepower, while the XC90 is turbocharged and supercharged with 316 horsepower. That’s a really big difference! Acceleration for the XC90 is 6.6 seconds with the T6 trim and the GLE’s 0-60 time is 7.1 seconds on the GLE450.

Exterior

The XC90’s exterior looks very elegant, and its design is much improved compared to the last generation. They’re using Volvo’s new design philosophy for the exterior. I would prefer the R-Design trim; it makes the XC90 look somewhat sportier. The GLE hasn’t really changed since it came out in 1998 as the M-Class. But even with almost the same body structure, Mercedes has made it look modern for it to keep up with its rivals.

Interior

The XC90 and GLE are extremely practical since you can fold down the third row seats for a large cargo area, or carry six to seven people. The interiors are luxurious, as they are available with a panoramic sunroof and extended climate control for the second row and third row seats. The Mercedes comes with leather seats and wood trims as standard, however you have to pay extra for leather in the Volvo.

Verdict

I think that the XC90 wins this comparison due to its price and power. It’s a much more exciting car to drive and you can save more on fuel with the turbocharged and supercharged engine. Volvo is also a very premium brand with long-lasting cars.
