2020 Toyota Corolla XSE Hatchback Interior Review: Can Small Still Be Premium?

By Edward Loh, Words; Renz Dimaandal – Photos – MotorTrend

When the latest-gen Toyota Corolla was evaluated at our 2019 Car of the Year program, we lauded it as the best-driving Corolla in a long time, and we gave it high marks for its premium-feeling interior. Have our feelings about the latter changed a year later? Find out as we go inside, literally and figuratively, the 2020 Toyota Corolla.

Our fully loaded 2020 Corolla XSE hatchback tester came equipped with the 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine and CVT transmission. Resplendent in a color Toyota calls Blue Flame, with a mostly grey/black interior, our Corolla tester was sharp enough to garner appreciative nods from a couple young dudes in a Honda Civic Si while we were out on a test drive.

2021 Toyota Supra Gets Worse EPA Numbers Than 2020 Model

By: Angel SergeevMotor1

Back in February this year, Toyota unveiled the 2021 Toyota Supra with a healthy power boost, lots of upgrades, and an A91 Special Edition model. The sports coupe probably won’t reach showrooms before this summer but MotorTrend has already obtained the Supra’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) efficiency numbers for the 2021 model year. They are slightly worse than before but we can live with that.

According to the publication, the 2021 Toyota Supra will return 22 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. For a comparison, the 2020 model year variant was estimated at 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined measured by the EPA’s fuel efficiency test cycle.

2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE Review: Gem in the Lineup

By Kelly Lin – Words Brandon Lim – Photos – MotorTrends

The Toyota RAV4 dominates the sales charts, but we’ve spent enough time behind the wheel to know it’s a middling competitor in its segment. Although we’ve praised its stylish cabin and abundant safety features, we’re quite unimpressed with its chassis and powertrain. Fortunately, the RAV4 Hybrid changes the narrative, correcting many of the gas RAV4’s flaws, all while delivering 40 mpg.

RAV4 Hybrid Design

We’d argue the RAV4 is one of the most attractive vehicles in its segment. Eschewing the bulbous look of many competitors, the RAV4 features chiseled lines and strong, squared-off corners. Our XSE Hybrid tester is particularly stylish, sporting black accents all around the exterior, including the fender arches, rocker panels, and roof. Eighteen-inch black wheels complete the look, giving this RAV4 a lot more presence than your average mainstream compact SUV.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition: Ultimate Bug-Out Buggy?

By Frank Markus – Words Steven Pham – Photos – MotorTrends

My week in the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition started off with an expensive-sounding, expletive-inciting “crunch” noise. I was merely pulling the pristine flagship Toyota into my garage for safe keeping, proceeding at a yacht-mooring pace when the blood-curdling noise came from overhead. “That ridiculous overlanding roof basket!” I correctly surmised.

It had not occurred to me that a factory-equipped Toyota wouldn’t fit in my garage. The spec sheet height of 74 inches suggests 10 inches of clearance. The standard luggage rack adds 3 inches to that and the basket another 6-3/4. My open garage door apparently hung down just far enough to snag the basket’s wind deflector.

2020 Toyota GR Supra Long-Term Arrival: Controversy Behind, Let’s See What It’s Really Like for the Year Ahead

By Chris Walton – Words, Renz Dimaandal – Photos – MotorTrend

It’s been two decades since the Toyota Supra was center stage at Toyota dealerships. With the arrival of the all-new A90 generation, believe me when I say we’ve read every one of the “It’s not a real Supra; it’s a BMW with a Toyota badge and body” comments. It’s not, and I wrote a thorough backgrounder on this topic in the March 2019 issue. And would you as an automotive enthusiast prefer both the BMW Z4 M40i and Toyota Supra 3.0, sharing mechanicals as they do, or neither be available right now? Also, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra advanced to the finalist round of our annual Car of the Year contest, and the Z4 did not. MotorTrend en Español managing editor Miguel Cortina wrote a comparison test between the two if you’re still a doubting Thomas. The 2020 Toyota Supra is legit.

2020 Toyota C-HR Review: How Does It Stack Up & Should You Buy It?

By Denis Flierl – Automoblog

The 2020 Toyota C-HR is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) C-platform. The ride is smooth and the handling is crisp, but the amount of engine noise inside may turn buyers off. The C-HR looks sharp on the outside, but drivers may feel like they are paying the price when dealing with blind spots. While there are redeeming qualities, the 2020 Toyota C-HR is probably not our first choice in a segment ripe with options.

Toyota RAV4 Fuel Economy: What Kind of MPG Does it Get in the Real World?

By Kelly LinMotorTrend

The Toyota RAV4 achieves competitive fuel economy in its segment—if you look at the EPA numbers. But as we know, these figures don’t always reflect real-world driving. So how efficient is the RAV4 really? We conducted our own fuel economy test to find out.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 AWD in our long-term fleet is EPA-rated at 25/33/28 mpg city/highway/combined. But we recorded a much better highway number, which bumped up the RAV4’s combined rating by a considerable margin. Our Real MPG results came in at 24.2/39.1/29.2 mpg, making the RAV4 more efficient than our long-term 2017 Honda CR-V Touring AWD, which scored 21.9/34.2/26.1 mpg. Pretty impressive.

Can You Off-Road in a RAV4? Wheelin’ in the RAV4 TRD Off-Road

By Alex LeanseMotorTrend

Straight to the trails in Toyota’s rally-inspired compact crossover.

You love exploring the great outdoors, but you need a proper vehicle to make it happen. Problem is, the overlanding rigs you see on Instagram are too big, too expensive, and too impractical for your everyday life. You’re in luck: The ruggedized compact crossover niche is blowing up like a campfire marshmallow. Entrants include the Jeep Cherokee TrailhawkJeep Compass Trailhawk, Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, the forthcoming Ford Bronco Sport, as well as two versions of the Toyota RAV4: the Adventure trim, and the TRD Off-Road. That’s right, two RAV4s.

The latest in Toyota’s range of trail-ready entries is based on its ultra-popular small SUV. The 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road shares its ride height, clearance angles, all-wheel-drive powertrain, and most features with the Adventure. Then what makes the TRD spec special? A “rally-inspired” suspension setup, wheels wrapped in proper off-road tires, and a few intention-signaling badges. Is it any more off-road ready than the Adventure? Even Toyota isn’t sure. So we made it our mission to find out.

Specs Check: Toyota RAV4 Prime vs. Ford Escape PHEV

By Miguel CortinaMotorTrend

We take a look at two of the most anticipated plug-in hybrid SUVs of the market.

Hybrid crossovers are popular. The Ford Escape Hybrid arrived in 2004 and was the pioneer in a market packed with internal combustion engines. But as electrified vehicles started getting more attention and governments imposed harsher regulations to cut CO2 emissions, new hybrid SUVs arrived. In recent years, however, some automakers have taken further steps in the electrified scenario, developing plug-in hybrid SUVs.

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime and the 2020 Ford Escape PHEV are the two newest mainstream plug-in hybrid compact crossovers, offering more power and range than their regular hybrid variants. Here’s a look at some of their specs, including fuel economy, range, and recharging times.

Hybrid SUV Battle – 2020 Toyota RAV4 XSE vs. 2020 Honda CR-V Touring

By Zach Gale – Words, Brandon Lim – Photos; MotorTrend

Two rivals compete for hybrid SUV supremacy, and it’s a close fight. Go ahead, splurge. Treat yourself to the best compact SUV in the showroom—just don’t let the hybrid badge surprise you. If that h-word provokes associations of stodgy, slow, compromise-mobiles, consider this: The 2020 Honda CR-V and 2020 Toyota RAV4 offer engine upgrades that deliver more responsiveness and efficiency than almost any SUV under $40,000.

Oh, and you’ll retain the interior space you expect while traveling more than 100 miles longer between fuel stops. When it comes to having your cake and eating it, too, the hybrids of these segment-dominating rivals provide satisfying and guilt-free motoring. At the higher end of the segment, though, which is the best hybrid SUV—the CR-V Touring or the RAV4 XSE?
